A LOOK BACK AT 2012 FOR EARTH HOUR

It's been a huge year for Earth Hour - the launch of new global campaign, our movement spreading to a record 7001 cities and towns, not to mention all of the beyond the hour projects, big and small, that are making a difference to the planet we live on. We thought we'd take a look back at some of the more memorable events that took place around Earth Hour 2012 and throughout the year.

TREKKING THE HIMALAYAS TO WITNESS GLOBAL GLACIER RETREAT

Last month I took it upon myself to head into the Nepal Himalaya for 25 days. This was actually the second time within 2 years that I decided to head into the same area. Many of you know about the famous mountain that goes by the name of Mt. Everest, and as the tallest mountain in the world it reaches unbelievable heights of 8848m.

RIO+20: WHAT KIND OF FUTURE DO YOU WANT?

We’re now in the two-week countdown to Rio+20, the UN’s conference on sustainable development in Brazil.

It’s 20 years since the landmark 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, the first time world leaders came together to debate the issues of development and the environment on the same platform.

What’s not up for debate is the urgency for action.

EARTH HOUR REYKJAVIK SHEDS LIGHT ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

With great success, 2012 marked the first year of Reykjavik’s participation in Earth Hour. The Division of Environment and Transport and volunteers like Svala Georgsdóttir and Maríanna Friðjónsdóttir lead the effort to bring the Reykjavik community together to build awareness of, and participation in the event.

CBRE sets a global challenge for Earth Hour 2012!

We are a little more than a week away from Earth Hour and I’ve been following the mounting totals carefully. We’re getting close to 500,000 sq. ft. of participation in Earth Hour but still need a final push to hit the target.

WE CAN SAVE - THE INSPIRATION FOR EARTH HOUR IN GREECE

In times of difficulty, where does one look for inspiration? Where shall one find the antidote to sadness? The answer for Greece is where life flourishes. Given the global economic crisis, WWF Greece is getting personal with its Earth Hour 2012 campaign. People are invited to participate with their own message, one of support of saving the natural environment to protect a lot more.

According to the International Energy Agency, the power sector is responsible for 37% of the CO2 equivalent emissions worldwide. For appliances, electronics, and lighting - making up around one third of this sector - the energy efficiency savings potential is roughly 50 per cent. WWF supports Topten, an international network promoting clean technologies and energy efficient appliances, and cars . Currently, seventeen European countries, China and the USA are part of Topten.
