Earth Hour is big news in a little town called Prairie City, Iowa, USA.
Shaun Hudnut teaches an elementary school class there. As they began organizing for their school and home Earth Hour events, his students showed an interest in contributing towards one of the Earth Hour crowdfunding projects. The students watched a few of the different projects at earthhour.org and eventually voted to contribute to “Bancas for Philippines.” They were moved by the devastation caused by the typhoon.
The class is now accepting free-will donations from all the students in the school of about 200 kids with the goal of raising $400 to purchase one banca. During the week of Earth Hour, they will be counting how much money is donated each day and using a visual of a banca in the school’s common area to show their progress. For every $50 donated, Mr. Hudnut will add part of the banca to the visual.
It’s amazing what a group of young people can do when they put their minds to it. They really do prove we can all be superheroes for the planet if we just use our power.
