Nine cities including the capital, Nicosia, participate in Earth Hour. 14 landmarks across the nation, including the Presidential Palace, switch off their lights for the world's greatest symbol of environmental action.
Earth Hour Cyprus events are coordinated by Alexia Sakadaki, who has been behind the switch off efforts in Cyprus since 2008. Municipalities, organizations, media, governmental authorities and private companies participate every year to a massive effort for supporting the Earth Hour's cause.
In 2013, Earth Hour Cyprus took place at the Presidential Palace with President Nicos Anastasiades in attendance. To make Earth Hour more relevant to the younger generation, an event for children was organised at Acropolis Park.
2014 is showing more promise than ever before, with the Commissioner for the Environment giving commitment to the Earth Hour cause.
