Sydney has celebrated Earth Hour 08

Sydney’s at its most calm: The Coathanger a shadow of its former self. The sails of the Opera House dimmed to half-light. The city skyline is filled with darkness. Sydney is once again sending its Earth Hour message around the globe, cloaking its best known icons in darkness: the Kings Cross Coca-Cola sign is off, Luna Park is quiet, the Centre Point Tower a darkened pinnacle. At the Sydney Observatory stargazers are taking advantage of newfound clarity in the night sky, hundreds of picnics are being held along the harbour shoreline. Pete Murray is the support act to this hour of darkness, blasting out an acoustic set from the Fleet Steps of Mrs Macquarie’s Chair– a VIP party to celebrate Earth Hour.
The Earth Hour message is extending across the city. At Avalon Beach, torches blaze and the music blares out fuelled by solar-powered amps! And the mood is vibrant – participants conscious of the message they are sending out, whilst having a good time. Someone tells me this is a BYOB party – Bring Your Own Beeswax – yep, even the candles are non-toxic.
See the acoustic gig by Pete Murray, performed at the Royal botanic Gardens.
