If you're as addicted to Instagram as the Earth Hour Global team, then you'd know how engaging it is as a social mobile app. IG is a unique, easy and creative way to instantly share your environment with the world, all from the palm of your hand. As we embrace the possibilities of technology to find a solution to the world's environmental issues, it's important for us to be able to inspire new ideas about protecting our Earth, and acting for a more sustainable planet.
With this in mind, we've decided to hand our official Instagram account (@earthhourofficial) over to you. So how are we doing it?
We thought up a unique hash-tag that would encourage our digital communities to share the images that inspire action for a better world. To take part, simply tag images #yourplanet so we can discover and feature the most inspiring shots from the Earth Hour global community.
Whether it's an image you've taken that shows sustainable parts of your city, or you completing an IWIYW challenge, or even an Earth Hour 2012 shot; simply include the #yourplanet hash-tag when you upload and you may see your shot on our feed.
We're also featuring the best of these images on our Facebook page, Tumblr blog and Pinterest board. But don't forget to let us know where in the world your image is from! So far we've had submissions from Indonesia, Malaysia, Norway, China, Italy, the USA and Mexico.
While we're here, it's worth mentioning that over 8000 Instagram images were tagged #EarthHour or #EarthHour2012 for this year's lights off event. Because so many of you used the app to share what your Earth Hour looks like, we were able to work with a great team of volunteers who are helping us showcase where and how these stories were shared, so stay tuned!
As an open sourced campaign, our strength comes from you and your participation in our activities well beyond the hour. Earth Hour, and especially I Will If You Will, are opportunities to engage, share and connect ideas for our planet with other individuals, organisations, governments and businesses. So get involved and let's see the world unite to protect the planet, 365 days a year.
