Greenpeace International Executive Director Kumi Naidoo has delivered a powerful message to the citizens of the world, as he completed his I Will If You Will challenge for Earth Hour 2012 in Rio de Janeiro.
Naidoo dyed his beard green at the Rio+20 Summit in Brazil, after more than 10,000 people personally accepted his challenge to support Earth Hour by taking an individual action to work for a green, peaceful planet.
The Rio+20 Summit was chosen as the place to complete the dare, as world leaders met 20 years after governments made commitments to act decisively to avert catastrophic climate change. Sadly, the world’s leaders haven’t acted quickly enough to build a sustainable future, so it’s up to us to show them it's our own collective action that will power a better world.
"Our future will only be secured if each and every one of us, including each and every one of you, make every hour an Earth Hour… and get actively involved in our communities, in our workplaces, in our schools, in our universities, and spread the message that time is fast running out for the future of this planet,” said Naidoo.
"Any activities you can pursue that promotes a peaceful, green, just and equitable world [are] actions that you would be taking to ensure that when the question is asked, ‘What did you do when the world was falling apart, when the future of our children was at risk?’ you can say, ‘I did my part.’ And let’s hope that you can inspire our governments, businesses (and) leaders to do likewise.”
As Earth Hour moved across the planet on March 31, hundreds of thousands of people accepted more than 60 feature challenges from the likes of Miranda Kerr, Isabel Lucas, Giuliana and Bill, Nadya Hutagalung, Marc Nelson and Claudia Bahamón, effectively turning their lights off commitment into an ongoing action beyond the hour.
