José María Castillejo of Zinkia Entertainment talks about their partnership with Earth Hour

Three years ago, I was thrilled to partner with the World Wildlife Fund International and the Earth Hour campaign in Spain. Environmental sustainability – conservation of natural resources, protection of habitats and wildlife, reducing waste, recycling – all of these are important issues to me.

I strongly believe, as do my colleagues at Zinkia Entertainment, that conserving energy, water and other value natural resources is essential. And if we can incorporate environmentally friendly practices into their young lives now, then our children will enjoy a cleaner, safer world, cognizant of their impact on the environment and committed to sustainable lifestyle practices which will one day seem as natural to them as buckling a seat beat has become to all of us.

I also believe that by teaching our children the importance of respecting and preserving our planet, of how simple choices they make affect people and animals the world over, we have the opportunity to not only change our world today and their world tomorrow, but also, to make the world better for future generations. That’s why I have committed to incorporating these valuable lessons into the content we produce. By using fun and engaging examples of eco-sustainable habits, we’re teaching our youngest citizens how they could share earth-friendly lifestyle practices with their whole family.

In fact, that was one of the most surprising lessons I learned from our first campaign with World Wildlife Fund in Spain – that when children become the teachers, the lessons have an even greater impact on adults. Think about it. Has your child ever taught you a life lesson? If so, then you know first-hand of the indelible mark they have the potential of making on the world.

World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour and our principal values for the Pocoyo series are so closely intertwined – respect, love and caring for the world and all its inhabitants – that when we add a bit of natural childhood curiosity and imagination to the mix, we can affect change in the world for our children, to make them happier if we can, while imparting basic values that will later play a role in making them better human beings.

Through the development of innovative content delivered on a variety of media platforms -- a strategy that has been at the core of Pocoyo’s brand growth – we know that we can engage hundreds of thousands of young children to not only turn out the lights for that one hour in March, but also provide them with easily comprehended tips on how they can continue to incorporate eco-friendly habits into their daily lives.

Zinkia Entertainment remains steadfastly committed to spreading the Earth Hour message and we are proud to have our little Pocoyo continue to serve as the official Global Kids’ Ambassador for the 2012 Earth Hour campaign.
