Earlier this year, WWF-Hong Kong organized the “I Will If You Will” celebrity challenge, to encourage people across Hong Kong to take sustainable living to the next level. The public was asked to select a celebrity, either Kay Tse, Chet Lam or C AllStar, make an online pledge to set their own personal energy saving targets, and then submit or vote on a video giving an “I Will If You Will” action for the celebrity to carry out.
The “action” could be many things - a “go beyond the hour” green action or something “just for fun”. The celebrities watched the videos, selected their favourite actions and put them into practice to both reward their supporters and encourage everyone to set their own energy saving targets. A video was then produced to help spread the fun and the message.
WWF’s Earth Hour ambassador and Hong Kong pop singer, Kay Tse was a great supporter of the “I Will If You Will” celebrity challenge. Her actions were to visit a home for the elderly to give out free hugs! She then performed with other volunteers, singing a Cantonese folk song “Moonlight”. Kay also encouraged everyone to walk or to cycle to destinations within a 30-minute walking distance.
"City-folk" singer-songwriter, Chet Lam supported the “IWIYW” challenge by preparing a low-carbon meal with his friend, theatre actor Joey Leung. Joey has a rooftop garden where he home-grows different kinds of vegetables, enjoying both the flavor and the savings in transport-related carbon emissions. Chet and Joey prepared a rocket salad with locally-produced sour cream. Chet encouraged everyone to choose food sourced locally. He believes that low-carbon cooking methods like steaming can save time, energy and our environment. He urged everyone to start living a sustainable lifestyle, saying that through conservation, we can consume wisely while still enjoying our lives.
The popular boy band, C AllStar supported the “I Will if You Will” challenge by giving a street performance and dispensing free hugs to their supporters in Mong Kok. The band also shared energy saving tips, including increasing air conditioner temperatures by two degrees, selecting electrical appliances with Grade One Energy Efficiency Labels and switching off mobile phone chargers after the phones have been fully charged.
