I AM A GLOBAL AMBASSADOR FOR EARTH HOUR 2013
I am so excited to have just been announced as an Earth Hour Global Ambassador.
I have been involved with Earth Hour for several years now and I feel blessed to have worked with them in association with Miranda Kerr (my daughter) and KORA Organics, our certified organic skincare company.
Earth Hour is about uniting the world to protect the planet. It is a global call to action to every individual, business, school and community to take a stand for our world and for future generations.
We live in a world challenged by our very presence. Our earth asks nothing in return for what it provides. We continue to abuse it or allow the abuse of it if not by our own personal actions, but by our ignorance or apathy in relation to what is occurring. We only have to look at “fracking” in the mining industry as an example and I encourage you to look at the report on the Today Show.
For the most part we take our planet so much for granted.
Earth Hour’s “I Will If You Will challenge” asks us to take the step of taking our commitment to our planet beyond the hour and into our everyday lives.
Personally, I believe we are all connected. There is a universal thread of consciousness, an energy, which links us to each other, to every living thing and to the world as a whole.
Every person can contribute by implementing new things in their daily lives, by changing a few practices like turning off power points when not in use, being committed to recycling, walking, car pooling or taking public transport as opposed to driving. Every contribution makes a difference and as a Global Earth Hour Ambassador I am committed to bringing more and more earth sustainability practices into my everyday life.
I now try to use my car less, I eat certified organic whenever possible (I buy at the Farmers markets or local health food stores, mine is “Organic Avenues” at Bigola Heights and it is an amazing store and I feel so blessed to have it around the corner) and I avoid using plastic bags by taking my own shopping bags wherever I go. These are things that I have personally adopted in the past and have carried forward.
Our planet matters to me. We only have to look at the below video to gain an insight and an appreciation of how blessed, yet how truly insignificant we are in the whole scheme of things, in comparison to the grandeur of the universe.
Considering this insignificance, our impact on this planet is dire. Is that what we want to continue for our future.
This year for Earth Hour I have a pledge. I love to cook and in cooking I aim to be responsible for the energy I use. I am also responsible for the impact on the planet. I love the below quote from Joel Salatin:
Ultimately, we have a choice and our shopping dollars speak volumes.
My pledge for Earth Hour 2013 is:
I will video and share my top 5 favourite low-carbon recipes
500 people pledge to support the Earth Hour Australia Renewable Energy Pledge at earthhour.org.au
We filmed the five recipes on the weekend of the 10th March and didn’t we have some fun! You can see the behind the scenes footage and the videos of myself and Kate creating carbon-friendly recipes in my home. We also share our trip to the markets explaining what you can do to help support not only your health and the health of your family, but also the health of our environment as both are intrinsically linked. Stay tuned for some “behind the scenes” footage that I will post on my social media sites.
In relation to my pledge this year though, there is one catch. I will only release the videos as the number of pledges I receive rises. So for every 100 new pledges received, I’ll release a new video that will show you how to prepare a carbon-friendly, healthy, delicious and easy recipe for your family.
In 2001/2002 I had tumours in my spleen and had to have my spleen removed. Since that time I have been on a journey of wellness and have researched and applied everything I have learned personally to my life. I have never been healthier now and I believe knowledge is the key to making informed choices for our family. Late last year my co-authors Jen Barham-Floreani, Chef Kate McAloon and I released our first carbon-friendly i-book (Lunchbox Solutions). This is a paperless book and can be downloaded on your iPad. We also have a pdf version available. It is a state of the art; interactive e-/i-book with video and click through information and it contains healthy gluten free recipes as well as lots of information on health and wellness. For eg why you should use coconut oil as opposed to other oils when cooking, we provide better and healthier alternatives to sugar and standard, highly refined, highly processed white flour when baking and much more.
I was on The Today Show showcasing the e-/i-book as we have been the #1 most downloaded (free chapters section) in the Food and Beverage category worldwide on Itunes for over a month!!
You can find information on Lunchbox Solutions at:
We have kept the price affordable in that it is only $9.95 and we have done that because:
1. We want to impact the environment in a positive way.
2. We want family’s to fill their house and ultimately their bellies with highly, nutritious, yet quick, efficient and easy to prepare meals that don’t cost the earth to make.
3. And we want to share information on health and wellness.
As a further commitment to Earth Hour and to our environment, the first 50 pledges I receive on my site www.theresekerr.com will get a free copy of my new book Lunchbox Solutions, which shows how easy to create tasty organic superfood recipes and information for you and your family with minimal environmental impact – the fact that it is paperless and using miniscule amounts of energy when in use is something we are extremely proud of.
I hope you’ll join me and make your pledge for Earth Hour and in return you will get access to some healthy recipes and see myself and Chef Kate create them for you. Make your pledge here now: http://theresekerr.com/the-earth-hour-pledge/
Now don’t forget to share your plans for Earth Hour 2013. I would love to receive your photos and stories from Earth Hour and post them on my site so please don’t hesitate to send them in – I certainly will be putting my details up online and hope you join me. You can even send your plans in, in advance and tell us what you are doing.
Let’s join the global community and switch off our lights on Saturday, March 23 at 8:30PM, together, we can really make a difference.
